Make Way For Art...

After spending seven years in an apartment in Washington, D.C. with my husband, I developed a keen awareness of space, or lack of space, to create my artwork.

If my desk was full of papers from work, I would travel to the dining room table.  If my husband was working there, I would try his desk. If his desk was piled high with his books, then I would work at the coffee table.

In any of these scenarios, space to place my artwork to try was a constant issue.  Where do you place twenty-five to fifty cards that are drying anyway?

In comes BOON!  Yes, I said BOON.

A funny name for a funny tool I know.

Here is what it looks like:

But do you see what it's doing here?  Amazing isn't it?  Oh the simple things in life and what pleasure they can bring!!!  I found this little guy online, but I've seen them in places like the Container Store and even Crate and Barrel.  They're meant for drying baby bottles and all the little odds and ends that go with it.  The prongs (those bright green things) are fairly stiff with a little give for standing bottles straight up in.  As you can see from my photos, I have other ideas in mind.

I have the medium sized Boon Lawn Drying Rack, but they come in smaller and larger sizes. The great thing about these things is that they take up little space when you are not using it.  When you are in the mood to make, they can hold all sorts of odd objects.  I've used this to hold up to seventy-five printed cards I needed to dry.

In these photos, it is holding up some wooden ovals I put gesso onto.

When you're done with it, simply store it away.  You can lay it flat or stand it sideways like a book.
If it is dirty, you can take the "grass" out and place it along with the white tray into the dishwasher.

It's a no-mess, easy way to dry any artwork you are working on.

Here is the link if you are interested:

I promise, I'm not getting paid for this rant.
If you do decide to try it out, let me know how you like it.  I'd love to hear your ideas for how you might use it for your creations.

Cute Circus Owl Ready for the Fall Festivities

This is Toot the Owl.  No more wooded forest for him.  He ran off to the circus and saw his first elephant and a rather small mongoose.  He also had his first taste of cotton candy.  Quite delectable on the palate he thought.  Upon meeting the ring master, he was hired immediately for his unexpected talent for playing the pipe organ.  Now this cute little circus owl enjoys late evenings with bewildering sites played to the tune of familiar melodies you heard when you were a child off to the big tent.

You can find him in my shop, waiting to visit you at: www.etsy.com/shop/wildhearthistories

Today's Inspiration... STARS

I know I should be out doors enjoying this amazing, yet windy weather, but allergies has gotten the better part of me these past few days so I've been laying low.  The wind seems to die down in the evenings here in the D.C. area so I take my cue and get out for an evening stroll. The plus side to all of the day's wind is that the sky is crystal clear and I can see stars for miles around.  It's gorgeous!

It got me motivated to put together an inspiration board of sorts - all having to do with stars.

I share it with you here...  I hope you enjoy too!

Little Pretties

Look at these little pretties!  I'm working on these gems as part of a Spring collection I'll be putting out in another week or two in my Etsy shop.  I can't help but feel a bit excited about how they are turning out - so colorful and bright.

They're porcelain keepsakes, measuring 3 inches in diameter to hang about the house, in a little nook, or maybe even in your office to welcome you with a bit of color and sunshine.

I've made each of these lovelies by hand, first drawing with pencil, sketching out details, then with watercolor and ink.

*Sigh* I LOVE making things and this is no exception - a labor of love for sure.

Here are some closeups of the bird portraits.  The hummingbird is my favorite I think.

Sweet Inspiration

Ok- so have I mentioned that I am addicted to Etsy?  Well I am and if you didn't know it, now you do.  How can you not be is what I ask!?!  Seriously, the options and opportunities for shopping are endless.  Needless to say I found a treasure that I am thrilled to share - a beautifully hand-stiched embroidered work of art.

I just love the birds and the flowers, but my favorite think about it are the green leaves that frame the work.  On the back there's a sweet note from Peg, the gal who created this work back in the 80's.  If I were Dee I don't think I'd have ever let this go...

Now it sits on my dining room table and brings smiles whenever anyone looks upon it!  Just lovely!  *Sigh*

This purchase was made at a sweet little shop called Sun & Moon.

Embroidery Session; Part 2

Alright, so I am starting to feel confident on these fancy stitching skills and am starting to flex my finger muscles on trying out some new techniques with creating lettering and flowers.  I think I'm going for a wall hanging - although I didn't really have a clear vision of where I wanted to go with this so I am flying by the seat of my pants and will figure it out as I go.  So far, I'm digging' the nod to  spousal glee (my husband, Steve, was actually very touched) and I like the flower I through in on the left.  Now what to do with the rest of the space?  More flowers? I think that will be a given... Hmmm.. what else, what else?  If you've got any ideas shoot me a comment!  I need help getting the creative juices flowing in the embroidery department!

Here's the latest and greatest work on my project (no laughing please!!!):

On another embroidery note, I recently picked up this lovely case of amazing "floss" on Etsy.  Sometimes I think I buy more than I sell on there, but it's okie-dokie!  Just look at the amazing jewels of thread I found!  Aren't they lovely!?!  I was getting ready to make a big financial splurge at JoAnne's and Michael's craft stores when I thought I'd take a look in the vintage section of Etsy for a lot of floss and it turns out there are amazing deals there if you just take a look.  I love the fact that I am adopting thread from a fellow stitcher before me and wonder what these beautiful threads helped make.  I also like that it feels a bit "green" and "tree-hugger-ish" that I am re-using before going out and purchasing brand new.  To top it off - notice how each skein of thread is numbered?  Sweet! Now I can easily find the same color when I'm ready to purchase more...  Maybe I'm over thinking it, but still, I'm giddy.

If you are interested in picking up a deal on embroidery threads - check out these listings I found (and am oh-so tempted to purchase myself!)

True North

I love Paulo Coelho's book, The Alchemist.  If you haven't read it, you need to.  It's not even a request, it's an order!  I read the book sometime in 2004 and the book so moved me, that for the next 6 months, I didn't read anything else.  I just re-read the book over and over.  Strangely, I think that the prolog is the most powerful part of the book.  Coelho states that everyone is in search of their "personal legend" and that it is our responsibility to harness our gifts and share them with the world.  In doing so, we are making the world a better place to be because we are fulfilling what it is we were meant to do.

It seems simple enough, however Coelho also states that many times people are right at the doorstep of realizing their dreams and end up backing down from them due to the fear of actualization, because let's be honest, what's next after achieving something so great?  Do you keep moving forward with it or do you seek out the another path or chapter as part of your "personal legend" journey?

The task served up is even more interesting when I think of the kind of world we live in - how many of us are actually doing what we love?  When have we been in a job filled with so much excitement and curiosity that we stay up all night lost in the creativity and joy of it all?

At the time that I read The Alchemist, I was starting my first year of teaching, which any first-year teacher will tell you is the worst year of your professional life EVER.  I won't go in to all of the challenges teachers face as I know many of us have heard an angry teacher tirade.   But I bring it up because I had always dreamed of going on to earn a PhD in art history. While I got accepted to the top two schools of my choice, I just didn't have the money it would take to see me through.  In that moment, becoming a teacher seemed like an "honorable mention" to me.  This made that first year even harder, because in my mind, had I really followed my personal legend?

After nearly ten years in the education world, there are so many things I do love about being a teacher - the small souls so delicate and sweet that I meet and share time with, the hope they give me about our future, the time I serve as a witness to amazing transformations that take place... the examples can (and do) go on and on.

The cherry on top of all of this is that I now have my art business which gives me the opportunity to share my art and love for art with people around the world.  How amazing it has been to chat with a lovely lady from Germany, or a nice man in Egypt, or to look at who is viewing my work and learn that several individuals from France, the UK, or even Thailand have visited my blog or shop!?!

I share all of this with you, because I feel inspired by these events in my personal and professional life.  I refer to them separately, but isn't it interesting how intertwined they both are?  The personal and professional?  And what of that "personal legend" stuff?

Perhaps it is ever-evolving and a journey that reflects what you want to see, and at times, what you need to see.

I think that so long as you are traveling North, your True North is always right there - waiting for you.

Utterly In Love With Art Nouveau

I love, love, LOVE everything Art Nouveau and in a recent jaunt to the local library I decided to indulge in a few books completely dedicated to this amazing time in art history.  What is it about the fluid movements of the flowers and vines, the way the gauzy dresses drape those gorgeous feminine figures, and the dripping framework filled with intricate lines?

When I lived in San Francisco, there was an art gallery near the wharf, and they were displaying an original Alfonse Mucha print that was the talk of the town.  For weeks, I'd grab a coffee and sip it while I stared through the window at it.  Soon I began to shmooz with the owner while we drooled over Mucha's greatness.  OK- I admit I had him take a picture of me next to the print.  Dorky I know- but I get really giddy when I'm next to a work of art that an admired artist of mine created, touched, worked on, and who knows... maybe sneezed on?  Perhaps I'm going for some mad genius via osmosis.  The world will never know.

In any case, after pouring through my library books, I felt inspired to create my next bird illustration with a touch of the Art Nouveau designs I so dearly love.

This print can be purchased on Etsy at: www.etsy.com/shop/wildhearthistories

Etsy Shop Grand Opening for Wild Heart Histories!

Ladies and gentlemen! I am pleased to announce the grand opening of my shop on Etsy!

All of the work listed in my shop has been, and remains, a labor of love and is a reflection of my affinity for nature, illustration, and vintage ephemera.

Each work of art I create is carefully scanned and photographed for the best quality image and is printed using archival ink and acid-free watercolor paper to ensure a gallery worthy image every time.

I hope you enjoy my shop and are as excited about the artwork as I am.  Please check back often as I will have many more works of art that will be listed in the coming weeks.

This moment has been a long time in coming and the journey has only begun.  Thank you for letting me share my happiness with you!  Enjoy!
